Backed by a fiery sunrise, a ring-necked duck (Aythya collaris) drake cruises a Southcentral Alaska marsh.. These pretty little diving ducks are named for the very faint coppery-colored ring around the bases of the drakes' necks. It is a subtle identifier and many have wondered why they aren't named "ring-billed ducks," for the more prominent white ring around their bills.
