An adult female red crossbill (identified by its vibrant yellow plumage) performs acrobatics to reach a weather-dried crabapple in Anchorage, Alaska in late winter. These colorful passerines are named for their overlapping, sharply pointed, scissor-like bills which are perfectly adapted for extracting seeds from spruce and pine cones.
