Visitors in the torch of the Statue of Liberty, a visit which can't be made today. Visits to the torch were permitted until July 30, 1916 when shrapnel from two explosions in an arms factory on nearby Black Tom Island in New York Harbour damaged the statue. The two explosions were set off by German saboteurs. Germany subsequently paid damages to claimants, the last payment being made in 1979. After an anticipatary engraving in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, June 20, 1885, a year before the statue's dedication.
