Provost Guards attacking the rioters. New York draft riots, 13 - 16 July, 1863. The riots occured in response to Congress passing a law to draft men to fight in the American Civil War. In the incident shown in the picture provosts unsuccesfully tried to disperse rioters with a volley of gunfire. The mob turned on them, injuring 14 soldiers and possibly killing one.
