Equestrian portrait of Oliver Cromwell, 1599 - 1658. English military leader and politician. After an engraving by Francis Holl from an engraving by Pierre Lombart which was in turn based on a portrait of King Charles I by Sir Anthony van Dyck. To quote notes from the National Portrait Gallery: Lombart originally depicted Oliver Cromwell, but after his death and the collapse of the Commonwealth in 1660, Cromwell's head was polished out and re-engraved as the French king, Louis XIV. After Lombart's death, Louis was erased and Cromwell reinstated, as seen here, in response to market demand. In later editions, the head was changed to that of Charles I (as in the original Van Dyck portrait) and, finally to Cromwell again.
