Print dating from the 1870's celebrating the enactment of the 15th Amendment which was ratified on February 3, 1870. Part of the amendment states, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” Thus, the amendment gave African-Americans the legal right to vote, though in some states the so-called Jim Crow laws presented insurmountable monetary or educational obstacles to frustrate Black or poor White citizens from exercising that right. It was not until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that most African-Americans were registered to vote.
