Magic lantern slide circa 1880.Victorian/Edwardian.Social History. Slide set: The River Thames: from its head springs to the sea, lecture. Streatley Bridge will give a good idea of this charming place. Goring and Streatley are small villages, situated on either side of the river , which is here very wide, and are connected by a couple of long wooden bridges. The fine background of wooded hills, which extend for several miles, and are part of the great chalk downs of Berkshire, afford many extensive views of this beautiful neighbourhood. From the bridge, charming views are obtained in any direction; the rushing weirs and wooded hills down stream, forming a remarkable contrast to the quiet rushey reach. A bridge was first built here in 1837 being a flat timber bridge of beams on posts. Prior to this there was a ferry although occasionally people would ride across, even driving in a one-horse chaise.
